TUESDAY FOLK ART WORKSHOP
Instructor: Marjory Cole
Most of you know me from working in the office or
as Maya's Mom, but did you know that in another life I was a graphic
artist and a teacher? I have both a B.A. in Graphic Design and a
Teacher Certification (K-5). I worked in advertising for 4 years, but
missed working with children. So I went back to school for my
certification and taught for 4 years until Maya was born. Now that
she's old enough, I'm excited to combine both passions to teach at
Kipling House.
I believe the most important gift an art teacher
can give her students is the confidence to express their individual
creativity. Students will be inspired by Folk Artists to explore their
own unique style. Folk Artists have no formal art training and are
driven to create by passion alone. The innocence and purity present in
Folk Art appeals to young children and introduces them to a new way of
thinking about creativity. By studying the artwork of this very
special and unique group of artists, students will have the
opportunity to create brilliant artwork that reflects their own love
of art!
I will be teaching two week workshops that will
explore many mediums. The first workshop will focus on one of my
favorite folk artists, Mose Tolliver. We'll have a ball painting
unique self-portraits on scraps of wood. The following week we will
switch from paint to clay as we study the whimsical pottery of the
Meaders family to mold our own creations. Tuition fee is $45 (includes
materials and snack). We will meet from 3:00 - 5:00p.m. Class size is
limited to 8 and based on a first come basis. More exciting workshops
coming every month.
Session 1 (advanced primary and first years)
will meet on October 3 and October 10.
Session 2 (second and third years) will meet on October 17 and
October 24.
